The financial advocate helps customers get a handle on their money at tax time by connecting them to financial products and services, especially opportunities to save some of their tax refund.

The tasks

  • Promote savings, help customers take action to save some of their refund
  • Engage with customers, pitching our financial services and products to them.
  • Process enrollment in our products—U.S. savings bonds, savings accounts, prepaid debit cards, credit reports
  • Have conversations about money to offer support and resources
  • Be a part of a team providing stellar customer service

The skills

  • Willing to approach and engage with new people
  • Ability to respect customers’ financial decisions and actions without judgement
  • Passion for and experience with personal finance topics (savings, spending, debt, credit)
  • Empathy toward the financial challenges facing individuals with low- to moderate-incomes
  • Enjoy working in an ethnically and socio-economically diverse environment

The commitment

  • An hour-long info session before officially registering to volunteer
  • 6-8 hours of training (in-person and online)
  • One four-hour volunteer shift a week during tax season (January–April) or the summer (June–August) at one of our nine locations in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Bloomington, or Hopkins. Summer shifts are only available at the St. Paul main office.
