Customer Support Volunteer

The customer support volunteer is the tax clinic host, making sure customers have a stellar experience, understand the process and the paperwork, and have a chance to learn about and access financial services.   

The tasks

  • Be the first and final friendly face for customers, checking people in when they arrive and out when their taxes are complete  
  • Keep people moving through the tax preparation and review process 
  • Promote savings, help customers take action to save some of their refund 
  • Have conversations about money to offer support and resources 
  • Provide stellar customer service and maintain customer privacy 

The skills

  • No previous experience needed 
  • Passion for connecting with people and an interest in personal finance topics 
  • A knack for communicating detailed information in a clear way 
  • Ability to juggle multiple tasks and thrive in a fast-paced environment 
  • Ability to respect customers’ financial decisions and actions without judgment 
  • Bilingual in Spanish, Somali, Hmong, Amharic, or Oromo is a plus 

The commitment

  • Attend an info session before officially registering to volunteer 
  • 6-8 hours of training (primarily in-person) 
  • One four-hour volunteer shift a week during tax season (January–April) or the summer (June–August) at one of our nine locations in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Bloomington, or Hopkins. Summer shifts are only available at the St. Paul main office.
