Top 5 reasons to file for free

1.) With us, free really does mean free.

Minnesota has hundreds of free tax preparation sites, from Duluth to Montevideo to Worthington. Staffed by IRS-certified, passionate volunteers, free tax prep sites – or Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites – serve people making approximately $54,000 or less. Whether your return is simple or complicated, volunteers are trained and equipped to get you your maximum refund and identify the credits you’re eligible for.

In the Twin Cities, P+P has nine free tax sites in St. Paul, Minneapolis, Bloomington, and Hopkins serving individuals who make $35,000 or less and families or sole-proprietors making $55,000 or less. Tax sites are located on bus or transit lines and have a variety of hours during the day, evening, and Saturdays. Some sites are walk-in and others require an appointment.

Have a simple return and made less than $66,000 in 2018? You can also file online for free using MyFreeTaxes.

2.) Free tax preparation is high-quality.

The accuracy rate of free tax preparation sites is 93%! Volunteers at P+P go through 15-20 hours of training and pass an IRS certification test before they start doing taxes, and all returns are doubled-checked for accuracy. They’re trained to get you your maximum refund and all of the credits you qualify for. If you owe taxes, volunteers are equipped to help you set up a payment plan with the IRS or Minnesota Department of Revenue.

3.) We want to help with other parts of your finances, too.

P+P believes tax time is a money moment – an opportunity to get a handle on your money and use your refund to get ahead. At our free tax preparation sites, we offer an array of financial services and products, like savings accounts, prepaid cards, and on-site consultations related to saving, spending and debt-elimination strategies.

We’ll also share about and connect you to our other programs: Money Mentors, our free financial coaching program, and our FAIR checking, savings, and credit builder accounts available regardless of credit or banking history.*

4.) Your preparer is passionate.

The 550 people on our volunteer team are passionate about taxes and finances. They give their time, talent, and expertise to help people navigate the tax code and avoid costly fees that some paid preparers charge. They’re trained and experienced in helping people claim their maximum refund or minimize the amount they owe.

On our volunteer team are people like Andrew, who just love taxes and has been doing them for free for 30+ years, and Leo, who volunteers to not only do taxes but make a dent in economic justice.

5.) We’re here for you year round.

We’re here year round. We offer tax preparation at our main office during the summer and fall, too. Our staff is here to answers questions, assist with audits and returns that need amendments, and help file returns from previous years, too.
