This tax season marks 47 years of tax fun for Prepare + Prosper and our IRS-certified volunteers who are quite passionate about taxes and finances. January 20 through April 14, our 550+ volunteers will roll up their sleeves and provide free tax preparation at eight locations across the Twin Cities. Volunteers will also be on hand to help people save some of their refund, answer money-related questions, check in on their credit report, and more. It really is free and the best way for people who qualify to file their taxes.

Who can use the free services?

It’s based on income so individuals at $35,000 or less, families at $55,000 or less, and small business owners (with no employees) at $55,000 or less. There are some exceptions so be sure to check our website or call 651-287-0187.

How does it work?

Some of our locations are walk-in and others appointment-based and most are open Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings (some less and some more often). Check our website for our free tax clinic schedule.

What do I need?

Make sure to check our list of needed paperwork so that we can do your taxes correctly and get you your maximum refund. The basics you’ll need are an ID, a Social Security card (or ITIN card or letter) for every person on the return, and your income statements. But check that list as other things can apply to you.

I’m over income, do you have any recommendations?

If you have a simple return—like filing single with a W2—we recommend using www.myfreetaxes.com. It’s free software for anyone who made $66,000 or less.

As the outreach coordinator, I work to inform all who qualify—especially families who’ve been paying to get their taxes done in the past. Please spread the word about tax clinics that are not only entirely free, but also combine financial services that help people use tax time to get a handle on their money and create the financial future they want.

It is my job to spread the word, but it is my passion to see all Minnesotans access dignified, empowering tax and financial services! Why this passion? Before I was the outreach coordinator I was a client at Prepare + Prosper for eight years. The services I received and financial resources I was connected to have stabilized my family and assisted in overcoming financial barriers I previously thought undefeatable.
