The tax reviewer is the second set of eyes on tax returns prepared by other volunteers at our tax clinics. They make sure nothing was missed and put the seal of approval on every tax  return that leaves through our doors.

The tasks

  • Review state and federal tax returns done by volunteers on TaxSlayer software
  • Correct tax or data entry errors in TaxSlayer to ensure accuracy
  • Compile completed tax packets for customers
  • Provide support and leadership to other volunteers, answer tax questions as needed
  • Provide stellar customer service and maintain privacy of each and everyone

The skills

  • Strong background in individual income tax required, with low-income tax benefits or free tax prep programs a plus
  • At least two years experience preparing individual income tax returns
  • Ability to pay attention to detail while keeping up in a face-paced environment
  • Ability to provide feedback to other volunteers in a clear and supportive way
  • Computer proficiency
  • Enjoy working in an ethnically and socio-economically diverse environment

The commitment

  • Attend an info session before officially registering to volunteer
  • 20-22 hours of training (in-person and online)
  • Pass (open-book) advanced and Helath Savings Account IRS certification tests
  • One four-hour volunteer shift a week during tax season (January 20–April 17) or off-season (June 1—October 31) at one of our eight locations in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Bloomington, or Hopkins.
