Whether your return is simple or complicated*, we can help you. We offer free tax preparation and financial services. With us, free really does mean free. 

At Prepare + Prosper, our IRS-certified volunteers who are passionate about taxes will help you claim your maximum refund for free. We're here year-round and offer audit assistance. 

We offer tax assistance year-round:

  • January 21 - April 15 (traditional tax season):  Clinics at eight sites in the Twin Cities metro area
  • June through October:  Taxes prepared only at our main office.

Income guidelines:

  • Individuals making $35,000 or less per year
  • Families making $55,000 or less per year

Ways to get your taxes prepared

  • Appointment only:  Three of our tax site locations are appointment only
  • Walk-in:  Five of our tax site locations are walk-in only
  • Online:  Prepare your taxes for free online using

*We cannot prepare your taxes if you: have income as a cab driver, received rent payments from someone else, or delcared bankruptcy in the tax year you wish to file. There are other less common situations that are beyond our scope as well. Please call if you have questions about whether or not we can help you with your tax situation.

Do I qualify for free tax prep from Prepare + Prosper?

Our tax services are offered free of charge to individuals with a yearly income of $35,000 or less and families with a yearly income of $55,000 or less.

Where do I go to get my taxes done for free?

We have eight tax sites in St. Paul, Minneapolis, Bloomington, and Hopkins. To find a tax clinic nearest you, visit our Find a tax clinic

What if there isn’t one in my area?

If you are unable to find a site in your area, visit the Minnesota Department of Revenue’s Web site to find a free tax prep site near you.

Do I need to make an appointment?

At some sites you do. All sites are walk-in except for our main office, Minneapolis Urban League, and ResourceWest. To make an appointment visit the homepage or call 651-262-2150.

How long will it take to get my money?

Filing taxes the traditional way – where a check will be mailed to you — typically takes 14-21 days.If you have a bank account, we can direct deposit your refund. You’ll typically (not always) receive your state refund in 4-5 business days and federal refund in 9-15 business days. If you don’t have a bank account, let us know. We’ll work with you to open an account.If you refund has been already been filed by us, you can track its status at the following sites — federal refund at IRS and state refund at Minnesota Department of Revenue
